Grace and her friends go on a long, yet short, journey to free the gargoyle army that she has learned had been frozen in time for centuries due to a poison the Vampire King gave them. The Vampire King has now declared war against Grace (who has declared herself the Gargoyle Queen), her friends, and anyone else who dares to stand in the way of the war he's waging to finally bring the supernatural out of the shadows. In the meantime, Jaxon and Hudson's parents, the vampire king and queen, want to get their hands on Grace, and when they do, they realize the power within her. Grace and her friends realize that Hudson is trapped in her head and need to get him out and kill him before he can bring harm to anyone else. She tries to navigate learning this side of her while also trying not to go crazy with hearing Hudson in her head. This month, I picked up my second-ever du Maurier novel, My Cousin Rachel, in a lovely buddy read with Melanie Grab the Lapels). It’s been almost TWO YEARS since I read and loved Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, a book that left me suspecting I’d found a new (to me) favorite author, so it was beyond time to try another of her books and seal the deal. Personally, I think it's a brilliant set-up, because it allowed Azzarello and Risso to amass a number of different types of crime stories at the beginning of the series while developing the deeper lore behind it. Shepherd, Dizzy Cordova-a recipient of Graves' offer that potentially could become much more-and Megan Dietrich-introduced as possibly one of Graves' enemy with an interesting brooch. Here in the first few stories, we're introduced to Graves, his associate Mr. Little bits of information are doled out as the story builds a deeper mystery. Each story is relatively self-contained with the mysterious Agent Graves making the offer of an attache case filled with the gun, bullets, evidence, and immunity to various individuals, but why and if it ties to anything larger is left to subsequent chapters. The first volume offers up three stories, setting up what's more or less the format for the first couple of years in the series.
